This is an image created initially by the Mandelbrot equation shown, and then manipulated.  Much fine detail is lost in the compression for the Web.  The discovery of the infinite variety of stunning images produced by so simple an equation created much public interest.  Nature manifests many examples of fractals, a fern leaf being a simple case.

Although these images are generated mathematically, the skills required to present them are no less than those needed to present landscapes.
